What made it hard
New operating rooms had to be tied into a live medical gas system serving ORs that continued operating throughout construction. Any error in a medical gas system is a patient safety event, and third-party verification failures cascade into schedule loss because the space has to be reopened.
Ceiling space above the corridor was already congested with existing gas, steam, hydronic and electrical services.
How we executed it
All brazing was performed by ASSE 6010 certified brazers with continuous nitrogen purge, and every joint was documented. Tie-ins to live mains were scheduled during non-surgical hours with zone isolation coordinated with clinical staff.
Routing was coordinated in 3D against existing services before fabrication so the congested corridor space was resolved on paper. Sterilizer steam and condensate were run by the same crew, which avoided the usual gap between a plumbing sub and a steam fitter.
We ran our own pressure, purge and cross-connection testing before calling the third-party verifier, rather than treating verification as the first real test.
What the owner got
The system passed third-party verification on the first pass with no rework, and no existing operating room lost gas service during the project.
Documentation, valve tags and alarm mapping were turned over as a complete package for the facility's compliance files.
